Purportedly named for the many beech trees growing on its hillsides, Beechview was settled by Scotch-Irish and English pioneers in the late 1700s. This Pittsburgh neighborhood stretches along a broad ridge two and a half miles south of the Point.
While Pittsburgh grew and developed into the political and economic center of the region, on the ridge, self-reliant farmers, miners, and shopkeepers maintained an easy interdependency. In 1905, Beechview separated from Union Township to become a borough. The broad ridge was graded and laid with trolley track, which brought commercial and residential development to the area. Beechview became a destination community for inner-city residents seeking relief from the crowded urban spaces. Hundreds of new families arrived, established businesses, and created a degree of prosperity for the community. Beechview merged with Pittsburgh in 1909, and today, it is a thriving and diverse neighborhood.

Kai Ambos, Antony Duff, Alexander Heinze, Julian Roberts, Thomas Weigend
R3,447 Discovery Miles 34 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The trans-jurisdictional discourse on criminal justice is often hampered by mutual misunderstandings. The translation of legal concepts from English into other languages and vice versa is subject to ambiguity and potential error: the same term may assume different meanings in different legal contexts. More importantly, legal systems may choose differing theoretical or policy approaches to resolving the same issues, which sometimes - but not always - lead to similar outcomes. This book is the second volume of a series in which eminent scholars from German-speaking and Anglo-American jurisdictions work together on comparative essays that explore foundational concepts of criminal law and procedure. Each topic is illuminated from German and Anglo-American perspectives, and differences and similarities are analysed.

The Best of Business Economics - Highlights from the First Fifty Years (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Robert Thomas Crow The Best of Business Economics - Highlights from the First Fifty Years (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Robert Thomas Crow
R2,897 Discovery Miles 28 970 Ships in 15 - 20 working days

Since its establishment in 1965, Business Economics has been an essential resource for those who use economics in the workplace. Its consistent intent has been to distinguish itself from academic journals by focusing on what is useful to practitioners of economics in their everyday work, and it has risen to become the leading forum for debating solutions to critical business problems, analyzing key business and economic issues, and sharing of best-practice models, tools, and hands-on techniques. In celebration of the journal's anniversary, The Best of "Business Economics" brings together forty of the best articles from half a century of publication: those that pushed boundaries, challenged conventional wisdom, and redefined the way practitioners and academics approached their work. Much of the insight afforded in this collection on the uses and limitations of economics are as fresh and useful today as when they were published. Featuring award-winning articles and the world's premier economists, this collection is an essential addition to any economics library.

Robert Thomas Wilson; Edited by Herbert Randolph
R1,664 Discovery Miles 16 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A colourful British general, Robert Wilson (1777 1849) was knighted many times over by crowned heads, but never by his own monarch. Described by Wellington as 'a very slippery fellow', he fought in the Peninsular and Napoleonic wars, and his published account of the Egyptian campaign resulted in Napoleon complaining to the British government about accusations of his cruelty towards prisoners and his own men. Following the invasion of Russia, Wilson was seconded to Kutuzov's army, and was present at all the major engagements. Edited by his nephew and published in 1860, this second edition of Wilson's journal includes personal and official correspondence from Tsar Alexander I and his generals, and gives not only detailed accounts of troop movements and strategy, but also vivid descriptions of the savagery meted out by both sides. It remains an essential source of information on one of history's most famous military retreats.

Hans Thor Andersen, Robert Thomas Atkinson
R3,371 Discovery Miles 33 710 Ships in 15 - 20 working days

This book provides new insights on cities and the nature of urban development, and the role of knowledge management in urban growth. It considers how knowledge informs policies and supports decision making, and can assist in addressing the drivers of urban change. The way that knowledge is produced and used in urban development is analysed, with examples drawn from a range of European countries. This book illustrates how the development and implementation of policies for urban areas can draw on knowledge management, even as the knowledge economy itself stimulates the evolution of the city as a place of innovation and creativity. Whilst knowledge grows in importance, so do urban issues, particularly in economic and political contexts at both European and national levels. These essays explore growth in the range of knowledge available in urban contexts, the ways to generate new knowledge from a wide range of stakeholders, and how these can make an effective contribution to decision making processes in urban development. The attractiveness of cities and surrounding areas to knowledge based forms of industry and investment and the competitiveness and performance of cities are a matter of major concern for national governments. In a sense it has become too important to leave to city politicians, and it is a topic requiring sustained reflection. This book gives the reader a detailed understanding of the issues involved and prompts further reflections.

Inland Waterways of Germany (Paperback, Revised edition): Barry Sheffield Inland Waterways of Germany (Paperback, Revised edition)
Barry Sheffield; Edited by Catherine Best, John Best, Robert Thomas
R929 R827 Discovery Miles 8 270 Save R102 (11%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This is the only comprehensive directory to the entire navigable German waterway system available in English. After a general introduction to the area, details of German formalities and cruising notes, each river and canal is described in detail and supported by a table of distances indicating locks, bridges, mooring places and other features. The text is supported by small scale mapping and colour photographs. Barry Sheffield's first edition of this book was published in 1995 shortly after the reunification of Germany. He had spent several years exploring the navigable waterways and, with the assistance of Konrad Nussbaum, the acknowledged expert on German rivers and canals, he produced this authoritative work on the subject. Barry Sheffield died some years ago and this revised edition has been produced as a result of many contributions from users of the original book. Catherine and John Best have completely recompiled many of the original tables, brought information up to date and supplied excellent new photographs. Robert Thomas has contributed a more general update, in particular to the introductory sections.

R277 Discovery Miles 2 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Working with even small amounts of qualitative data can be intimidating. Students may not know where to start, how much detail to involve, what themes really tell you, and why they matter in the larger context of the research. Focused on building confidence and decreasing anxiety from information overload by helping students build a manageable system that works for digging into and making sense of their individual data, this Little Quick Fix answers questions like: - What is a theme? - How do I start looking for themes? - How do I turn my transcriptions into themes? - How do I turn my codes into themes? - How do I turn my categories into themes? - How will I know if my themes are any good? - How will I know if my themes are meaningful? Students need help over hurdles at every stage of their research project. They want simple, powerful, accessible tools that deliver results fast. They need to meet interim assessment deadlines and prove that they have successfully passed through multiple stages of their project, or need to master a stage of understanding in a learning cascade before they can proceed to the next week in their methods module. Their supervisors are increasingly unable to help, but will still be assessing results. Students need more than YouTube. Titles in the Little Quick Fix series offer: * Visual, design-led learning * Clear, structured, useful pedagogy * A hand-holding, step-by-step approach for students who are less able, or less academically prepared by school so far * Effective self-directed learning with DIY progress tracking * A stand-in for the busy/unavailable supervisor

The Founding of Alabama - Background and Formative Period in the Great Bend and Madison County: Frances Cabaniss Roberts The Founding of Alabama - Background and Formative Period in the Great Bend and Madison County
Frances Cabaniss Roberts; Edited by Thomas Reidy
R1,037 Discovery Miles 10 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The most thorough history of Alabama’s Madison County region, widely available for the first time The 1956 dissertation by Frances Cabaniss Roberts is a classic text on Alabama history that continues to be cited by southern historians. Roberts was the first woman to earn a PhD from the University of Alabama’s history department. In the 1950s, she was the only full-time faculty member at what is now the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where she was appointed chair of the history department in 1966. Roberts’s dissertation, “Background and Formative Period in the Great Bend and Madison County,” remains the most thorough history of the region yet produced. While certainly a product of its era, Roberts work is visionary in its own way and offers a useful look at Alabama’s rise to statehood. Thomas Reidy, editor of this edition, has kept Roberts’s words intact except for correction of minor typographical errors and helpful additions to the notes and citations. His introduction describes both the value of Roberts’s decades of service to UAH and the importance of her dissertation over time. While highlighting the great intrinsic value of Roberts’s research and writing, Reidy also notes its significance in demonstrating how the practice of history—its methods, priorities, and values—has evolved over the intervening decades. In her examination of Madison County, Roberts spotlights exemplars of civic performance and good community behavior, giving readers one of the earliest accountings of the antebellum southern middle class. Unlike many historians of her time, Roberts displays an interest in both the “common folks” and leaders who built the region—rural and urban—and created the institutions that shaped Madison County. She examines the contributions of merchants, shopkeepers, lawyers, doctors, architects, craftsmen, planters, farmers, elected and appointed officials, board members, and entrepreneurs.

The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice (Hardcover): Marc Hertogh, Richard Kirkham, Robert Thomas, Joe Tomlinson The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice (Hardcover)
Marc Hertogh, Richard Kirkham, Robert Thomas, Joe Tomlinson
R5,462 Discovery Miles 54 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice examines the wide range of scholarship exploring the administrative decisions made by public authorities that affect individual citizens and the mechanisms available for the provision of redress. The Handbook identifies and provides a survey of key transnational themes in administrative justice research, considers theoretical and methodological approaches to administrative justice, and provides a view of the future of administrative justice research. One aspect of administrative justice, namely the study of law and administration, is a core component of law school syllabuses and scholarly research around the world. For many public lawyers, this area of study has been focused heavily on legalistic redress systems (e.g. judicial review). Justice against administrations, however, is delivered through a much broader range of mechanisms than legalistic processes alone: fair initial decision-making procedures, internal review systems, ombuds, administrative tribunals/adjudication, and other institutions play a vital role. Despite their importance to modern governance across the globe (and to the lives of individual citizens), these broader aspects of administrative justice have been left relatively neglected and under-researched, and the Handbook represents a groundbreaking achievement in establishing administrative justice research as a vital and discrete area of study. The Oxford Handbook of Administrative Justice will be an essential resource for legal scholars and social scientists wishing to understand the complexity of this important field.

Immigration Judicial Reviews - An Empirical Study (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Robert Thomas, Joe Tomlinson Immigration Judicial Reviews - An Empirical Study (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Robert Thomas, Joe Tomlinson
R3,305 Discovery Miles 33 050 Ships in 15 - 20 working days

This book analyses how the system of immigration judicial reviews works in practice, as an area which has, for decades, constituted the majority of judicial review cases and is politically controversial. Drawing upon extensive empirical research and unprecedented research access, it explores who brings judicial review challenges against immigration decisions and why, the type of immigration decisions that are challenged, how cases proceed through the judicial review process, how cases are settled out of court, and how judicial review interacts with other legal and non-legal remedies. It also examines the quality of immigration judicial review claims and the quality of the initial administrative decisions being challenged. Through developing a novel account of the operation of the immigration judicial review system in practice and the lived experience of it by judges, representatives, and claimants, this book adds a significant new perspective to the wider understanding of judicial review.
